  2. Indian Sikh fundamentalist leader, who
  3. campaigned for the creation of a separate
  4. state of Khalistan during the early 1980s,
  5. precipitating a bloody Hindu-Sikh conflict in
  6. the Punjab. Having taken refuge in the Golden
  7. Temple complex in Amritsar and built up an
  8. arms cache for guerrilla activities,
  9. Bhindranwale, along with around 500
  10. followers, died at the hands of Indian
  11. security forces who stormed the temple in
  12. `Operation Blue Star' June 1984.
  13.
